Always on the lookout for artistic and culture changes, La Biennale de Montréal is planning its 2009 edition under the theme of Open culture, a theme that was proposed by creative director Scott Burnham and strongly supported by Claude Gosselin. Based on the evolution of computer technologies such as "free source" software, this movement examines the creative process, the sharing of information and one's relationship with culture.
Under the governorship of Claude Gosselin, CIAC's Executive and Artistic Director and associate curator of this year's edition, La Biennale de Montréal 2009 will present both works of, and research conducted by, artists from Québec and Canada as well as artists from the international scene who are committed to the principles of Open Culture.
Photos, videos, installations or digitals works will be there to be discovered during the month of May, an invitation to a better understanding of this innovative cultural movement.
The involvement of the general public is significant throughout this year's event, as several interactive projects and games will be available as creative works are deployed in an urban setting. Focus will also be on how technical evolution impacts one's daily life and one's relationship with the world around us.
To round up its program, La Biennale de Montréal is hosting an international seminar on this theme as well as numerous conferences.
CIAC's e-magazine (Issue 33, May 2009), a bilingual publication, addresses the issue of "Network Art". Editor Anne-Marie Boisvert has written an analysis of the relationship between art and the internet.
As the first event of this type which is entirely devoted to the Open Culture movement, La Biennale de Montréal once again demonstrates its will to reflect the most recent artistic and culture breakthroughs, while maintaining its role as a full-fledged member of the international network of biennials.
